SkyStream 3.7TM
     2.4 kW Residential Power Appliance

SkyStream
Is a breakthrough in a new generation of RPA (Residential Power Appliances) that will change the energy landscape of how homes and small businesses receive electricity. SkyStream is the first fully integrated system that produces energy for less than the average cost of electricity in the United States and it produces usable energy in exceptionally low winds.

SkyStream is available on towers ranging from 33 to 110 feet. Its universal inverter will deliver power compatible with any utility grid from 110-240 VAC, single or three phase. SkyStream will efficiently and silently provide up to 100% of the energy needs for a home or small business. Any extra energy is fed into the grid spinning the meter backwards.

What is SkyStream 3.7TM?

Skysteam 3.7TM, developed by Southwest Windpower in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, is the newest generation in residential wind technology. Skystream 3.7TM has a 1.8 kW rating and is the first fully integrated small wind generator specifically designed for the grid -connected market. Skystream 3.7TM is designed for homeowners looking to reduce or eliminate their monthly electric bills.

SkystreamTM is a down-wind (wind hits the blades on the downwind side of the tower) direct drive (gearless or no transmission) permanent magnet wind generator. SkystreamTM uses an innovative 12 ft. rotor and produces approximately 400 kWh per month in a 12 mph wind.

The initial prototype has been operating at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado for almost two years and has undergone extensive performance, reliability and duration testing in accordance with international accepted standards.

What will it cost and how long will it take to pay for itself?

SkyStreamTM, installed, cost approximately $14,000 to $29.000, depending on tower height and installation cost. Cost includes the generator, operation controls, inverter and tower. SkyStream is also available with taller towers to accommodate a locations wind resource.

SkyStreamTM is capable of producing energy at a fraction of the cost of other small wind, solar PV or reciprocating engine technology. SkyStreamTM is expected to produce energy for under $0.09/kWh. Depending on installed cost, average wind speed, local cost of electricity and state rebates, SkyStreamTM can pay for itself in as little as 5 years.

Some states and countries offer incentive investment programs that can cover as much as 60% of the cost of a SkyStream 3.7TM. To learn more about states incentive programs, go to:

What makes this product unique?

SkyStream 3.7TM is unique for being the first all-inclusive wind generator with controls and inverter built-in.

SkyStream 3.7TM was designed for very low winds, reaching rated power at just 20 mph. In addition to innovative technology, Southwest Windpower invested heavily in tooling to reduce component cost.   Doing so makes it possible to sell SkyStream 3.7TM at such a low price.

Its full 2400 watts is achieved at 20 mph with a maximum rotor speed of 325 RPM. Because of the exceptionally low RPM, the machine operates very quietly.

A visually aesthetic shape played a key role in the design to show that a wind generator is not only a clean source of energy but pleasing to the eye.

Does it make sense for me to install this system?

Southwest Windpower recommends installing SkyStream 3.7TM at sites with the following criteria:

Adequate Wind Resource:   Minimum average wind speed for SkyStreamTM is 12 mph. Ideal sites have greater average wind.

Site Free from Obstructions:   Clean, unobstructed wind is best for SkyStream 3.7TM. The top of the tower should be a minimum of 20 feet above any surrounding object within a 300 foot radius. Although the machine can be installed on smaller lots of land, properties of one acre or more are typically ideal as they will more likely have unobstructed wind.

Suitable Zoning:   Tower installation must comply with local zoning regulations. In addition, it  is also advisable to make sure there are no Home Owner Association regulations that prohibit the use of towers.

Interconnection with Utility:   Local utility must allow for interconnection. The 1979 federal PURPA act requires small systems can connect to the electrical grid; but homeowners should consult their local utility.

Consumers should have an electrical cost of $0.10/kWh or greater. Consumers should look at their electric bill or consult with their local utility.

How do I get a SkyStream installed at my location?

So you have determined that a SkyStream will work on your property…now the next step is how to get it installed.

We will provide a sales contract base on your installation needs and will assist with financing options, if needed, whivh we have available.  Once accepted, we will move forward to begin your installation.

Because of the great variations of local building codes and licensing restrictions, we will have to work with local authorities on your behave to obtain the necessary building permits and approvals.  In addition, we will interface with your local electrical utility to assist in helping obtain the Grid Tie Agreement necessary in order to begin putting the energy produced by your wind turbine back on the grid.

Once the foundation has set (typically 30 days after pour), the e Marine factory trained team can come in  to assemble and start up the SkyStream (typically in less than one day).

Do it yourself?  If  your a DYI kind of individual,  please contact us so we can review  some options available.

Your Responsibility

Now that you are in the electric power generating business, you will need to connect to the electric grid.  Before connecting, you must contact the local electric utility supplier and sign a Grid Tie Agreement with them..  Each utility has its own program requirements but this will be a necessary part of the project.  Contact your local utility, tell them you want to connect using a grid tie wind generator.  They will provide a contractual agreement that you will need to enter into.  It may require a special liability policy with them as the named payee for protection against power from your system going back onto the grid when a power outage occurs. They may also have some special equipment interface or interconnect requirements which you will have to meet.  Some additional electrical requirements may be necessary as deemed by local code. We will help you with the Grid Tie Agreement!
